New First Responder Group Established in Uist

New First Responder Group Established in Uist: Uist CFR Group

A new 16-strong community first responder group (CFR) has been established in Uist.

The aim of the volunteer group is to respond to a potential life-threatening emergency in the vital first few minutes before an ambulance crew arrives.

The group cover all the Uist islands split into regional groups. This includes three in North Uist, one in Mid-Uist, six in South Uist, three in Benbecula, and three in Eriskay.

Due to the geographical makeup of the Uist Islands, the causeways to certain locations can be closed to vehicles when there is inclement weather making CFRs even more essential.

Claire Bagley, Paramedic at Benbecula Ambulance Station, said: “It is fantastic to have a CFR group on Uist to support the local community.

“Local businesses from across Uist came together to help to fund the CFR kit bags, which include an AED, and we’ve also had an amazing response from the community who have also been fundraising.

“The group really is a fantastic asset; providing lifesaving skills in emergencies to the people of Uist.”

Michael Dickson, Chief Executive, said: “I’m absolutely delighted that a new CFR group has been established in Uist.

“Our Community First Responders play a vital role in their communities, starting treatment while an ambulance is on route as every second counts.

“They are highly valued by the Scottish Ambulance Service, and we greatly appreciate their dedication to supporting their local community.”
